Hip Surgery for Dogs & Cats in Clovis & Fresno
At Armstrong Pet Hospital in Clovis, near Fresno, we provide advanced hip surgery for dogs and cats. Hip problems can occur due to trauma, dislocation, or degenerative conditions such as hip dysplasia. With the right surgical intervention, most pets regain comfortable mobility and return to an active life.
When Is Hip Surgery Needed?
There are several hip conditions in pets that may require surgery:
Hip fractures – often due to trauma such as car accidents or falls
Hip dislocations (coxofemoral luxation) – when the ball of the hip joint comes out of the socket
Hip dysplasia – a genetic condition that leads to arthritis and joint pain over time
The exact type of surgery depends on your pet’s condition and what we find during the procedure.
Hip Dislocation (Coxofemoral Luxation)
For hip dislocations, we often recommend toggle pin fixation surgery.
Restores the ball of the hip into the socket
Provides strong stabilization
Allows for early weight-bearing and faster recovery
In small dogs and cats, femoral head and neck osteotomy (FHO) may also be recommended. This procedure removes the diseased femoral head, relieving pain and allowing a “false joint” to form.
Hip Surgery – Fracture Repair
For traumatic hip fractures, our preferred treatment is bone plating.
Provides strong fixation of the fractured bone
Allows for early use of the affected leg
Restores the pelvic canal, which helps protect against nerve damage and GI complications in the future
Recovery & Aftercare
Recovery varies depending on the surgery performed, but most pets begin to use the operated leg within days. Aftercare includes:
Strict rest for the first 1–2 weeks
Gradual return to activity with leash walks
Pain management and optional physiotherapy to rebuild strength
Our team will provide you with a customized recovery plan tailored to your pet’s needs.
